슈만 교향곡 전집 - 사이먼 래틀 경 & 베를린 필하모닉 오케스트라

래틀이 베를린필과 내놓은 첫번째 자체 음반이다. 그동안 워너 브라더스를 통해 음반을 꾸준히 출시했지만 이제는 디지털 콘서트홀이라는 자체 브랜드도 있기에 음반도 자체적으로 기획에서 발매하는 듯 하다. 다른 게시물을 통해서 또 이야기할 기회가 있겠지만 적어도 내 관점에서 래틀은 이 첫번째 음반을 제외하고는 그렇게 좋은 성과를 보여주고 있지 못하다. 뒤이어 출시된 베토벤 교향곡 전집, 시벨리우스 교향곡 전집등 래틀의 세계관이 고스란히 녹아있는 음반을 출시했지만 내가 듣기에는 역시 이상하다. 이것에 대해 조금만 더 이야기하자면 이런 음반보다는 오히려 영상물에 더 강점을 보이고 있다. 피터 셀라스와 합작한 마태수난곡과 요한수난곡은 아마 클래식 분야 21세기 무대 연출에서 하나의 획을 그은 공연이 아닐까 싶다.

다시 본론으로 들어와서 래틀의 슈만을 들여다보자. 디지털 콘서트홀에 들어가면 종종 무료라고 뜨는 공연이 래틀의 슈만이다. 아마 자신있다는 뜻일 것이고 실제로 래틀은 자신만의 방법으로 슈만을 설득력있게 그려낸다. 그의 슈만은 교향곡1번부터 4번까지 모두 경쾌하고 가볍게 진행되고 있다. 그렇지만 이런 점은 최근에 많은 지휘자들이 도전하는 실내악적인 앙상블과는 조금 다르다. 영상에도 알 수 있듯이 비교적 작은 편성으로 연주하였다. 대신 더욱 더 날렵하되 각 개인이 내는 소리의 질감을 두껍게 가지고 가는 방법을 택했다. 그래서 담백하지만 적절하게 양념이 첨가된 맛이 난다.

개인적으로 1번부터 4번중에 하나만 추천하라고 하면 그냥 다 들어보라고 말하고 싶다. 4개 모두 그저 그렇다는 것이 아니라 4가지 모두 고르게 잘 연주되었기 때문이다. 그래도 꼽는다면 필자가 제일 좋아하는 곡인 2번을 추천하는 수 밖에 없다. 여기서 잠시 아바도의 말을 빌리지면 많은 사람들이 4번 교향곡을 슈만 교향곡의 최고봉으로 꼽지만 나는 2번이 최고라고 생각한다. 아바도가 이 말을 하며 최고의 슈만 교향곡 2번을 오케스트라 모차르트와 남겼고 지금도 종종 듣는 애청음반이다. 다시 래틀의 이야기로 돌아와서 래틀의 2번은 아바도의 그것보다 훨씬 발랄하고 경쾌하고 날렵하게 진행된다. 들으면 여운이 남는 그런 음반이라기보다는 깔끔하게 끝나서 뒤에 잔맛을 남기지 않는다.

혹시 도대체 어떤 연주인지 궁금하다면 유튜브를 찾아서 디지털 콘서트홀 예고편을 보기를 바란다. 래틀의 음악은 듣는 맛보다는 보는 맛이 종종 더 크다.

This is Rattle's first self-label record with the Berlin Philharmonic. In the meantime, Rattle and Berlin Phil have been releasing their recordings through Warner Bros., but now they have their own brand called Digital Concert Hall, so the record seems to be releasing in their own plans. There will be another chance to talk through other posts, but at least from my point of view, Rattle is not doing so well except for this first record. It is also strange for me to listen to the release of the album of Rattle's worldview, including the complete Beethoven symphonies and the complete Sibelius symphonies. To tell you a bit more about this, I have more strengths in video rather than music. The concert of Matthew Passion and Johann Passion with Peter Sellas is probably one of the performances in the stage production of the 21st century.

Let 's come back to this and look at Schumann in Rattle. When I enter the digital concert hall, the performances are often free, which is Rumble's Schumann. In fact, Rattle is convincingly drawing Schumann in his own way. His Schumann is progressing lightly and lightly from the first to fourth symphonies. This, however, is a bit different from the chamber ensemble, which many conductors are challenging lately. As you can see in the video, It's played with a relatively small composition. Instead, Rattle chose a method that was more sleeker, but thicker, with the texture of each individual sound. So it is tender but flavored with seasoning properly.

Personally, if you ask me to recommend one out of four, I would just like to tell you to listen. All four are not just that, but all four are played well. If you do not mind, I can only recommend my favorite song, # 2. If we take a moment here, many people consider the 4th symphony to be the best of the Schumann symphony, but I think the second is the best. Abbado said this and left the best Schumann Symphony No. 2 with Orchestra Mozart, and it is a favorite music often heard today. Returning to Rattle's story, Rattle's #2 is much more youthful, cheerful and sloppy than that of Abbado. If you listen to it, you will not be left behind.
