라흐마니노프 교향곡 2번 - 이반 피셔 & 부다페스트 페스티벌 오케스트라

사람들은 라흐마니노프를 두고 '최후의 낭만주의자' 라고들 말한다. 동시에 시대에 뒤쳐진 작곡가라는 비평도 함께 따라온다. 그만큼 그는 새로운 음악이 피어나던 시기에 옛 전통을 고수했던 작곡가였다. 그렇지만 오늘날 청자의 입장에서 그 사실은 별로 중요하지 않다. 왜냐하면 그는 오늘날 사람들이 가장 매력적이라고 여기는 선율을 잔뜩 만들어놓았기 때문이다. 클래식에 대해 잘 모르는 사람일지라도 라흐마니노프의 선율만은 한번쯤 들어본 기억이 있다고들 말한다. 특히 피아노 협주곡 2번만큼은 남녀노소를 가리지 않고 그의 가장 인기작이다.

그렇기에 라흐마니노프의 선율은 중요하다. 필자가 생각할 때 라흐마니노프 곡의 해석에 있어서는 음악적 구조보다 선율이 우선한다고 본다. 선율을 바라보는 다양한 시각이 있지만 피셔와 BFO는 그들의 능력을 백분 활용하여 가장 투명하고 관능적인 라흐마니노프를 완성시켰다.

가장 먼저 이야기하고 싶은 것은 그들의 음색이다. 사실 필자가 이반피셔와 BFO를 가장 좋아하는 이유중에 하나도 그들의 음색이다. 각종 메스컴에서는 그 음색을 '벨벳 사운드' 말하기도 하던데 나는 그런 단어보다는 '섹시한' 이라는 형용사를 선택하고 싶다. 그들의 음악을 듣다보면 특정 순간순간마다 귓속이 간지러울만큼 섹시한 음색을 뽐내준다. 누구나 예상하듯이 이 음반에서는 1악장 그리고 특히 3악장에서 그들의 이런 특징이 정말 잘 발휘된다. 너무나 아름다운 바이올린의 음색에 취하지 말기를 기도할 뿐이다.

동시에 이들의 음색은 정말 투명하다. 대게 많은 지휘자들이 실내악적인 앙상블을 만든다고 하면서 악기의 수만 줄인채 연주하다가 실패한다. 그런 지휘자들이실내악적인 앙상블을 만든다는 목표를 달성했을지는 몰라도 그것이 음악적으로 풍부해졌는지는 의문이다. 그렇지만 피셔와 BFO는 이런 실내악적인 앙상블을 기반으로 누구도 따라할 수 없는 그들 특유의 투명한 음색으로 다양한 요리를 우리에게 선보인다. 심지어 4악장조차 투명한 음색으로 일관하며 이 악장이 과연 Vivace 라는 용어가 어울리는지 의심하게 만든다.

이 투명함의 정점은 교향곡과 같이 수록되어있는 마지막 곡 'Vocalise' 에서 제대로 확인할 수 있다. 기존의 'Vocalise' 가 가지고 있는 슬픈 음악이라는 고정관념에서 탈출할 준비를 하라고 권하고 싶다. 피셔와 BFO의 'Vocalise' 그런 감정까지 투명하게 만들며 전혀 새로운 음악을 만들었다. 

더불어 이런 해석이 고스란히 청자에게 전해질 수 있는데는 훌륭한 녹음의 결과이다. 아직 필자는 SACD를 감상할 정도의 경제적 능력이... 갖춰져있지 못하기에 SACD로 못들어봤지만 SACD로 들으면 극강의 음질과 함께 눈물이 난다는 증언도 여럿 뒤따르고 있으니 기회가 되시는 분이라면 꼭 SACD로 이 음반을 들어보시길 권한다.

People say Rachmaninoff is "the last Romantic". At the same time, criticism as composer lagged behind the age comes along. He was a composer who held on to the old tradition at the time when new music was blooming. However, from the viewpoint of the listeners today, that fact is not very important. Because he has created a lot of melodies that people see as the most attractive today. Even if you are not familiar with the classics, Rachmaninoff says that you can only remember the melody once. In particular, Piano Concerto No. 2 is his most popular work regardless of sex.

Therefore, Rachmaninoff's melody is important. When I think of it, I think that Rachmaninoff 's interpretation of melody takes precedence over musical structure. While there are various views of the melody, Fischer and the BFO have made full use of their abilities to complete the most transparent and sensual Rachmaninoff.

The first thing I want to talk about is their tone. In fact, one of the reasons I like my favorite Ivan Fischer and BFO is their tone. In various kinds of music, the tone is also called 'velvet sound', and I would like to choose adjective called 'sexy' rather than such words. When they listen to their music, they show off the sexy tone that will tickle their ears every moment. As one would expect, this record really works well in the first movement, especially in the third movement. I just pray that I will not take on the tone of a beautiful violin.

At the same time, their tone is really transparent. Many conductors say they produce chamber music ensembles, but fail to play with only a few tens of instruments. Although such conductors may have achieved their goal of producing chamber music ensembles, it is doubtful that they have become musically rich. Fischer and BFO, however, show us a variety of dishes based on these chamber music ensembles in their distinctive, transparent tone. Even the four movements are consistent with a clear tone and this movement doubts whether the term Vivace is appropriate.

The peak of this transparency can be seen in the final song 'Vocalise' which is recorded with a symphony. I would recommend that you prepare to escape the stereotype of the sad music that the existing 'Vocalise' has. Fischer and BFO's 'Vocalise' that made the feelings even more transparent and made a whole new music.

In addition, this interpretation can be passed on to the listeners as a result of the excellent recording. I have not been able to use SACD because it is not equipped with economic ability to appreciate SACD but I have been following many testimonials that it will be tearful with the sound quality of SACD if you listen with SACD. I encourage you to listen to this record.
